Within the normal paper-based office the financial impact is predominantly made up of purchase, printing, storage and postage, can become very expensive to maintain, whilst the environmental impact can be huge, for even the smallest of businesses. Traditional paper-based processes take a huge toll on the environment, as the paper production process is one of the most pollutant manufacturing processes, releasing more than 200 million pounds of toxins per year.
E-Sign is a digital document and advanced electronic signature provider specialising in digitising work processes and helping their customers become less reliant on paper. To help businesses progress towards a paperless office, we carried out research into the financial and environmental impact of digitising paper-based processes in the following industries:
By liaising with our customers in these industries we established the huge savings to be made by digitising processes.
A Liverpool law firm, with on average 200 employees, found that by digitalising documents they were able to save the following:
- 1.4 million pieces of paper over 12 months.
- £160,000 saved on printing costs
- Over £100,000 saved on storage of documents
- Over £45,000 on postage of matters

The environmental impact of these savings
Total carbon emissions reduction by switching to E-Sign=8,201.12 kg CO2e
A recruitment consultancy, with 58 employees, found that by digitalising documents they were able to electronically send and receive 1,500 contracts annually. They were able to make the following savings and impact on the environment:
- Up to £2000 saved on printing.
- Up to £2,400 on postage
Total financial saving by removing paper based documentation =£20,736.43
Total carbon emissions reduction by switching to E-Sign= 120.92 kg CO2e
An eCommerce company, based in North East England, with on average 250 employees, found that by using E-Sign they were able to digitalise over 1700 documents. They made the following savings:
- Over £1000 in printing and paper purchase costs per annum
- Over £2,500 for postage alone (not including stationary costs such as envelopes etc.).

The financial savings made by simply removing paper-based processes is clear to see, however the environmental impact is huge. The worldwide consumption of paper has risen by 400% in the last 40 years with over 30% of harvested trees being used for paper manufacturing.
